How to add a personal touch to your home

October 16, 2015

It can sometimes be tricky to add your own personal touch to your home. If you hate clutter, are renting, or aren’t feeling particularly inspired, read on to discover our top tips for adding personality to your home.

Renting? You can still decorate your walls!

Don’t fret about making a more permanent change to your walls, most landlords will allow you to paint the walls if you ask permission and offer to paint over when you move out if your chosen shade isn’t their cup of tea. Instead of putting up with insipid magnolia walls, paint everything white for a fresh blank canvas, or choose a statement colour on one feature wall to brighten up a room.

Create a fun temporary feature by using wall hangings as opposed to wallpaper – our Welcome Wall Hanger is the perfect addition to add interest to your hallway -, or create a gallery wall by hanging a collection of prints together on a bare wall. There’s no easier way to add a personal touch to a room than by curating a mini gallery of framed photographs, postcards, prints or objects that have a special meaning to you. Opt for Accessories

It may seem obvious, but the simplest way to add your own personal touch to your home is by adding accessories such as cosy rugs and cushions, ornate vases of flowers, or elegant candles. Choose a theme and colour scheme that works with your room and your personal taste, and keep the accessories within this theme to tie the room together. We love adding a touch of gold or industrial elements to add interest – just ensure that you only opt for accessories that you love to allow your personality to shine.

If you prefer a more minimal aesthetic, you can still add accessories, just keep things simple. Add a candle and a plant to your bedside table, a vase of flowers on the kitchen table, or a couple of cushions onto the sofa, and you have instantly injected your touch into the room.

Bring Botanicals into your home

Whether you prefer beautiful blooming bouquets, delicate jars of wildflowers, easy to care for cacti, or an urban jungle of wildlife that dominates your room, plants are a quick and easy way to stamp your personality into your home.

How you display your chosen plant is just as important and personal as the plant itself. Do you create a mini terrarium (very on trend right now), craft your own hanging baskets from macramé, chose a simple pot, or opt for a statement vase?

Don’t let Lighting be an after thought

All too often, people create beautiful rooms and completely neglect their lighting, leaving their bulbs bare or covering them up with dated lampshades. The right lighting can make a complete difference to a room, and is a great way to express your personality.

If you love your home to feel snug and cosy, place a selection of table lamps around the room and accessorise with candles. Alternatively, showcase a fun personality by opting for Vegas-style neon lighting either propped up against a feature wall or fastened onto the wall.

Bare bulbs can look super stylish if used in the right way. An industrial inspired room would look great with our Nostalgia Twisted Flex Pendant Set hanging from the ceiling.  We also love the idea of adding a masculine touch to lighting by using one of our Decanter Pendants – perfect if you’re a lover of liquor!

Lighting from Rose & Grey

The main point to consider when styling your home is to put what you have seen on Pinterest or in a friend’s home into the back of your mind. Concentrate on your own personal taste and opt for objects that you love and that express your personality!
