We've all seen trends predicted yearly and often enough they really do capture people's imaginations. But have you ever thought about where trends come from in the first place?
Trend predictors use all sorts of data to understand what the next year's consumer preferences might be (and often they are doing it at least 5 years in advance!). Fashion plays a key role since what you see on the catwalk often filters into your home, if a little slower than the pace of fashion. But stranger things such as politics, the economy, where we're travelling to and the latest innovations in science and technology also play a part.
Our trends this year are built upon a solid foundation of research but also the instinct of the Rose & Grey team - our expertise lies in buying, styling, marketing and all things 'home' so we like to think we have a good feel of what we can see coming.
1. Deep Earth Colours
Little Greene's 'Ganache'
Down to earth - Chestnut Gingham Mug, Rose & Grey
Seen creeping in bit by bit over 2024 - colours inspired by baked pigments of the earth are 2025's palette. Browns (yes browns), clay pinks, dark maroons and yellowy ochres are set to be huge this year. Pantone's colour of the year was 'Mocha Mousse' - a soft, milky chocolate tone, though our favourite paints for this vibe are Little Greene's Ganache and Split Pink - both of which cocoon and soothe (which we all probably need a bit of this year.)
2. Statement Hallways
Oh hello Hallway! Harlow Bench in Olive, Rose & Grey
Farewell over-looked entryways and landings, hello halls and stairs that WOW. We'll be seeing eye catching runners, space specific furniture, clever colour use and beautiful lighting for these often overlooked areas of the home.
3. Organic Lighting
Curves the word - Wavy seagrass ceiling lamp - Rose & Grey
Think curves, sculptural forms and natural references. Curve's the word for 2025's lighting. Happily, natural materials such as seagrass, raffia and rattan lend themselves beautifully to this trend - a personal favourite of ours as we love how the light peeks through the gaps in the weave.
4. Multi Taskers
Jack of all trades - Essie Stool, Rose & Grey
Doing one thing is no longer enough - not for the planet, not for our spaces and not for an ever home-centred life. It's rarely thought about, but eco furniture isn't just about a special paint or FSC woods, what's even more important is that it isn't simply a faddish, throw-away piece. To be this it needs to be a chameleon - a side table should be portable and steady enough to be a bedside, a stool, a bath tray and a plant stand - 2025 will be about buying wisely, well and eco-consciously.
5. Yelllow, Yellow, Yellow!
They call it mellow yellow - Luxury placemats Rose & Grey
Dulux Colour of the year - True Joy
Another really key colour which you'll start seeing pop up everywhere is yellow. From soft vanilla to deep ochres, it seems we are all feeling home-confident enough to start using this beautiful tone. Dulux have announced their hue of the year as an almost acidic yellow named 'true joy' - it's an excellent pop of colour (such as in a small piece of furniture or a print) but who's brave enough to drench their entire room...let's see!
6. XL Sofas
Everyone clamber on - The Penny Sofa, Rose & Grey
There was a time that a sofa was a two seated affair where people politely perched. Thank goodness that slouching, lazing and sprawling are where it's at this year. L shapes (and even U shapes) with huge footstools allow maximum squish for everyone and the best news? It's totally on trend. Long live predictions that embrace the way we really live.
7. Metal Furniture
Metal, but make it pretty - Mustard Made Midi locker in Butter Yellow - Rose & Grey
In contrast to the more organic trends, metal is making it's way back into our homes - though not as you'd expect. Painted and powder coated metal furniture in gorgeous tones are set to take over this year - particularly in storage. Modern and industrial but juxtaposed with pretty colours - opposites attract this year.
