Right beside you - The humble bedside

It’s probably fair to say that a bedside is one of the most used yet overlooked pieces in your home. There it is, night after night, supporting your books, your lamps, your glasses of water, your jewellery. But with some thought, the right bedside can be more than just useful - it can transform your bedroom.

It’s not about size…

When choosing a bedside table, proportion matters more than size.
Ideally, the top should sit level with, or just a few centimetres below, the top of your mattress. This makes it easy to hit the snooze button without stretching, while also creating a more harmonious feel to the bed head area.

The width should also feel in proportion to your bed. A nice big super king bed (the dream) can take a wider bedside - just make sure you’ve still got room to move around the space.

They don’t have to match (but ensure there’s a ‘link’)

Matching bedside tables create a calm, symmetrical feel that gives you that boutique hotel look.
But using different tables on either side of the bed can make a room feel more eclectic and personal. Perhaps on one side a chest of drawers and on the other a more open table, or choose two different styles linked by a common aesthetic such as colour, wood or texture.
Mixing centuries is super popular - if you want to use an inherited chest of drawers and a more mid century looking bedside, just link it through which tone of wood you use.

Touchy Feely

A bedside table isn’t just somewhere to pop your phone on charge overnight. It’s an opportunity to introduce texture to your room.  A small lamp, a stack of books, a little dish or a simple vase of flowers can make the bedroom feel considered and styled. And that’s the kind of place you want to relax in.

A place to hang out
Like many of the best pieces of furniture, a bedside table works hardest when it feels easy. Chosen in the right proportion and styled simply, it helps transform a bedroom from somewhere you sleep into somewhere you want to hang out.
