These Four Walls | My Favourite Corner of my Home

These Four Walls | My Favourite Corner of my Home

To coincide with our 8th birthday competition, we asked one of our favourite interiors bloggers to share her favourite corner of her own home. After all, nothing makes you feel more at home than snuggling up in your favourite spot! We’ll hand you over to Abi from These Four Walls, to talk you through her favourite corner!

My favourite corner of my home is the sofa and alcove in the lounge. It’s a calming cocoon – a little sanctuary where I can snuggle up after a long day and let myself breathe.

My boyfriend and I moved into our little Victorian terrace in Bristol in October 2014 and the lounge was the first room we finished, so it set the tone for the rest of the house. Our style is quite minimal and influenced heavily by Scandinavian design, so we wanted the living room to feel airy and clutter-free, but also homely. Luckily the bare bones gave us plenty to work with, as there’s a big bay window and a fireplace, and the original coving and skirting are still in place.

We started by painting the walls a pale, silvery-grey colour, and then added warmth through blankets and cushions.  The alcove cabinets and shelves were built by a local carpenter, who did a great job – particularly as he had some very wonky walls to contend with! They allow us to hide away mess and display books and treasured items, and they fit well with the architecture of the house.

I love sitting in this spot, surrounded by art and mementoes from our travels. There’s a model tram from Lisbon, vases from Scandinavia and photos from Barcelona, plus a pouffe from Morocco where the cat often curls up for naps. There are also lots of candles – we’ve spent a lot of time in Copenhagen and we love the Danish concept of ‘hygge’, which doesn’t have a direct English equivalent but which roughly translates as the warm, cosy feeling you get from good company and good surroundings. Candlelight is a big part of that, so I’ve dotted tea lights and candle holders everywhere. My favourite piece of all, though, is the cat print by Bristol artist Laura Robertson. It’s a spoof of one of the city’s famous Bansky murals and, as I love cats and Bristol, it’s perfect for me!
