No House Rules & Mad About the House Event

June 19, 2018

Last Thursday we piled the Rose & Grey team and a heck of a lot of furniture & faux plants into a van, driving across the Pennines for our first ever journey to Leeds. Together with the talented women behind No House Rules (Katie and Amy), we hosted the one-and-only Kate Watson Smyth from Mad About the House as she discussed her new best-selling book and answered audience questions. What an evening!

It all began a few months ago, when Katie and Amy contacted us in the hopes that we might want to work together on the event. We jumped at the opportunity – especially when we found out that it would involve styling the top room of Northern Monk Brewery with our favourite Rose & Grey products. Rather than bring everything across with us (there are only so many sofas that you can carry up a fire escape!) we decided to style a corner of the room and also to create a seating area for Kate and to decorate the rest of the room with our faux greenery.

We started with our beloved Hugo velvet sofa in a luscious vintage green, building up the styling with our wooden furniture and an abundance of faux plants. Our amazing new neon lights from Bag & Bones really pulled the space together and helped to provide the perfect setting for our #selfiesofa competition. Guest perched, hid behind and even spun upside down for a chance to win a £150 Rose & Grey voucher – we revealed the winner on our Instagram Stories just a few hours ago.

The night itself was a roaring success – No House Rules certainly know how to throw a party! Northern Monk provided violet gin cocktails as a welcome drink, and the bar flowed all night as everyone clinked glasses of prosecco and sampled the beer brewed right downstairs. Nomad Catering produced beautifully presented canapes that the guests couldn’t get enough of, and everyone left with a goody bag containing one of their brownies along with a Rose & Grey mug and other items curated by No House Rules.

The highlight of the event, however, was sitting down and listening to Kate’s talk. She spoke about her book, the reasons why she didn’t include photographs, how to use Pinterest and many other tips for styling your dream home. The audience then had plenty of questions that she answered, providing us all with a little interiors wisdom. One of the best tips that we came away with was to think about your wardrobe when styling your home – if you always wear plain clothes in neutral colours, brightly patterned wallpaper probably isn’t for you!

Keep your eye on our events page for news of any upcoming events. For now, we’ll leave you with a selection of photographs taken on the night by Melissa Connolly.
