Autumn in the Home

Autumn has definitely arrived with a huge gust of wind and a flurry of leaves. Although we love the colours that this time of year brings, it can be hard to leave summer behind and start to enjoy the new season. If you’ve got the autumn blues, here are a few suggestions for how you can throw yourself into the season, including suggestions for both getting outdoors and creating a snug ambiance inside your home.

Visit a pumpkin patch

The perfect way to tempt yourself outside is to visit a pick-your-own pumpkin patch. If you’ve got kids, this is an autumn activity that they’re sure to enjoy but even if you don’t, it’s still a fun day out. Pick a selection of squash in different colours and sizes to create a seasonal vignette in your kitchen or on your mantelpiece – and don’t forget a traditional pumpkin to carve for Halloween!

Go on a walk

Ok, so some days you’ll just want to stay inside tucked up and sheltering from the storm outside, but the weather isn’t always terrible in autumn. There’s nothing better than heading outside and embarking on a long walk on a crisp day when the sun is shining. Seek out your nearest woods and go in search of the most colourful trees that you can find. Don’t just look up though – try and discover a collection of foraged finds such as feathers, acorns and pine cones to display in your home to help bring autumn inside.

Light candles around your home

The nights drawing in and the temperatures dropping are two perfect excuses for treating yourself to a couple of new candles! The Danes have definitely got the right idea with how flickering light creates the perfect ambiance in your home for the colder months. Avoid harsh overhead lights and place a couple of scented candles and tealights in lanterns in strategic places around the rooms that you use the most such as the living room and bedroom. If you’re unsure what fragrance to opt for, take our quiz to discover your perfect scent.

Cosy up your living room

Now is the time to make a few simple changes to your living room that will help you and your family to feel cosy throughout the winter months. Add extra texture to chairs with sheepskin throws, cushions and blankets. Introduce ambient table lamps and leave the overhead light switched off. Lay down a rug on the floor. String fairy lights over the mantelpiece. It’s easy to transform your home into a snug little nest with just a few quick changes and minimal new purchases.

Pick apples and bake crumble

Step outside and gather your own apples from a local orchard (or visit your nearest farm shop if you prefer) then return to the kitchen to make a good old-fashioned crumble! Not only will you create a delicious dish that instantly conjures up an autumnal ambiance, but the smell of baking apples wafting throughout your home will get everyone in the seasonal spirit. Our favourite recipe involves adding a generous spoonful of cinnamon to the baking apples and sprinkling ginger and hazelnuts onto the top of the crumble mix.

When you really don’t want to venture outside, the perfect solution is to invite your friends or family over to your home for a dinner party. Design a seasonal menu and spend some time creating a beautiful dinner table using our handy tips. You could place a tiny pumpkin on each place setting, decorate the room with seasonal blooms and use your favourite tableware to create an ambiance better than your favourite restaurant. Pick your own soundtrack, cook using autumn-themed ingredients and create your own cocktails for a cosy night in.
