Are you bored of your home? The beginning of the year tends to be a time when you take a look at all elements of your life and make huge decisions. For us, it’s definitely a time when we look around our homes and start to think about what improvements and changes we can make in the year ahead. You might take on a huge renovation project or decide to complete redecorate a room, but there are smaller changes that anyone can make yet will have a huge impact. Here are five ideas for quick and easy updates to make to your home this year.
A lick of paint
If you’re looking to make a quick, inexpensive change to your home, consider repainting your walls. Whether you opt to tidy up the existing colour or opt for an exciting new hue, a lick of paint will instantly make a room feel completely fresh. We love Farrow & Ball colours (we’ve recently repainted our showroom with Dimpse and French Gray) for ensuring an even coverage and providing subtle hues that make you realise just how many shades of grey and white there actually are. Don’t fancy painting an entire room? Try painting a chimney breast or an alcove to add interest to your room.
Update your cushions
You may not be in a position to buy a new sofa (if you are, take a peek at our collection here) but it’s amazing what a difference a few new cushions and throws can make to your existing furniture. Lift a tired colour scheme by swapping your cushions and introducing a new hue to your room. Whether you opt for neutrals, brights or prints, your room will instantly feel fresh. Don’t just think about cushions – throws, blankets and sheepskins can add instantly update a tired sofa or dull armchair.
Decorate your walls
Another simple way to update a room without making a huge change is simply to add interest to the walls. Mirrors, prints and macrame wall hangings all instantly change the aesthetic of a room at the same time as adding personality. Pick up colours used throughout the rest of the room in prints, make a small space seem larger by adding a strategically placed mirror or add texture and warmth with a wall hanging.
Do you have a room in your home that’s feeling a little lackluster but you don’t want to invest too much time and money into sprucing it up? Try adding a couple of plants to instantly add colour, texture and interest to the room. Personally, we prefer fake plants as we’re terrible at keeping the real things alive but either will achieve the same effect. Try placing plants on a coffee table or window sill, a large tree in an unused floor space such as behind a sofa, or even in pots hung from the ceiling.
Treat yourself to a new rug
Looking for one simple piece that can completely transform the look of a room or a hallway? A new rug will instantly change the appearance of your home, helping to make a space feel lighter, brighter or more interesting. Layer over tired carpet or warm up a wooden floor by choosing a rug that works well with your space. If you’re choosing a rug for a living space, dining room or bedroom, ensure that you pick a large enough size that fills the space adequately without looking like a floating island in the middle of the room.
