Ask Our Stylist: How to Style Dark Furniture in Your Home

Question: How can I add pieces of dark furniture to my home without completely redecorating?

Dark furniture can seem like a tricky addition to your home if it’s new to you. Don’t feel intimidated though – treat it like you would any other new piece of furniture. Yes, black furniture is currently on trend, but it is one of those trends that has longevity and isn’t a fleeting fad. If you add a black cabinet or sideboard to your home now, it will become a beloved piece that you treasure for years.

If you are purchasing a piece of dark furniture for the first time, start small. Invest in one key piece of storage furniture and see if you like how it fits into your home before you introduce more items. If the thought of a big black box makes you shudder, don’t worry! We offer several pieces of black furniture with glass panels or glass doors, which make the furniture appear lighter. For example, our fluted glass display cabinets beautifully reflect the light in their doors, making a heavy piece of furniture feel less overwhelming.

To add a touch of elegance to your home, our Osaka collection combines rippled black wooden panels with brass frames. This would be the perfect addition to a home that already has touches of brass throughout, effortlessly allowing your new furniture to link in with the old. The display cabinet is a great piece for anyone wary of dark furniture – you can dress the shelves with colourful or neutral accessories to suit your personal style and break up the dark colours.

Think about the colour of your walls before placing a piece of dark furniture in front of them. Personally, I love the look of a heavy black cabinet against a dark charcoal wall. Add touches of white and rattan to lighten the aesthetic and add texture. Our Noko pendant light looks beautiful hung over a black sideboard, styled with white accessories. This look was inspired by boutique hotel, Casa Cook in Rhodes who soften dark walls and furniture with rattan accessories.

Alternatively, dark furniture also looks great against pale walls. We styled most of our pieces against our classic panelled wall, painted in Farrow & Ball ‘Dimpse’. This colour provides a perfect pairing for black wooden furniture. Add off-white linen curtains and you suddenly have a completely different aesthetic that feels fresh, summery and light, despite the heavy piece of furniture. This is one of my favourite looks from our 2021 collection, and is one that you can easily achieve in your own home.
